Further, Bruton Parish records list the birth of a William, son of Mary Haythorn, on no father is listed. There is, however, a basis for thinking that his father was William Ratcliffe, of York County. It has been speculated that he was somehow related to the Earls of Derwentwater this speculation appears in various entries for William Ratcliff on various family history and genealogy websites, but has no basis in fact. ![]() The parents of William Ratcliff are uncertain. For these reasons, I think "Fifth Month" refers to May. ![]() However, the entry of his birth date in Henrico Monthly Meeting records likely occurred no earlier than the 1770s since the entry also lists William as "minister of Skimminoe." Given that William joined the Quakers in the late-1760s, I don't think he would have referred to July as "Fifth Month" since it was no longer the fifth month in the year. Some genealogies list his month of birth as July since that would have been treated as the fifth month in Quaker records prior to 1750 (the new year starting in March). We know from the Quaker records that William Ratcliff was born on 19 Fifth Month, 1739. ![]()
